English Speaking Practice for Grad Seminars

Grad seminars and advisor meetings ask for a very specific kind of spoken English. You need to explain ideas, ask careful questions, and respond in the moment. The language can be complex, but the delivery should still feel clear and human.

Useful patterns to practice

• Explaining a claim. Put stress on the term or contrast that matters.
• Asking a question. Use a real question melody, then let the final word finish cleanly.
• Disagreeing carefully. Keep the rhythm calm so the idea does not sound sharper than intended.
• Summarizing. Slow down at the end of a point so people can absorb it.

Practice lines

• My main question is about the comparison group.
• I see the pattern, but I am not sure about the cause.
• This result changes how we should frame the problem.
• Could we look at the second figure again?

Try this before a seminar

1. Write down three sentences you are likely to say.
2. Practice each sentence once for meaning and once for melody.
3. Record the hardest one and compare the contour.
4. Retry only the phrase where the meaning does not land.
